Choosing the Right Breed for Your Family & Lifestyle

Choosing the perfect dog for your family and lifestyle is one of the first and most important decisions that you can make. Not making the right choices in breed, size, temperament, and your ability to spend time and energy levels is why many dogs end up in shelters.

Once you have decided that you are ready to add a new member to your family, you should seriously consider your life style and     the environment in which your new pet will live.

(1.) Why; For what reasons are you getting this dog? (eg.). Protection, companionship, a play mate for your kids, or maybe a playmate for another pet?

(2.) What size is your home and yard?  If you live in a small appartment without any space to run, a smaller dog breed with tendencies towards lower energy levels, which do not require much exercise may be better suited when looking for a companion.

(3.) Energy levels and compatibility with your environment? Such as, if you have small toddler age children or elderly people in your home and  decide on a breed which is typically high energy, problems could be as simple as the child or elderly individual being knocked down, or even the ability of an older child to play with the family pet without worry. That dog could be too rambunctious for them to play with safely, therefore, consideration should be given to the environment in which your pet will live.

(4.) How much time can you dedicate to your new pet? Consider your schedule and how much time you are able to spend.. Some dogs need A LOT of exercise and one on one time, whereas, others can be quite independent and very happy to spend more time at home chewing on it's favorite toy and being a couch potato.

(5.) Finally, how much experience do you have? People who are first time dog owners should consider the breed and temperament of the dog they would like to own, like human's they all have different personalities and tendencies. Some breeds are great for 1st time pet owners whereas, others absolutely require an experienced handler.

In conclusion, it is extremely important to take all of the aforementioned points into consideration when choosing your new pet. This will lead to a much smoother and cohesive integration between you and your new family member.
